1 Samuel 5 – Jesus: The One Who Triumphs Over False “gods”

1 Samuel 5 & Colossians 2:15

Introduction: The Defeat of False “gods

Throughout history, nations have exalted false gods, believing them to be powerful and protective. Yet the Bible continually reveals that the God of Israel alone is sovereign. Nowhere is this truth more vividly displayed than in 1 Samuel 5, where the Ark of the Covenant is captured by the Philistines and placed in the temple of their god, Dagon. What follows is a divine demonstration of God’s supremacy, foreshadowing the ultimate victory of Jesus Christ over all powers, rulers, and spiritual forces.

Paul affirms this truth in Colossians 2:15, stating:

“Having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”

The events in 1 Samuel 5 provide a powerful preview of this triumph, showing that no false god can stand before the true and living God.

I. The Ark of God in the House of Dagon

After the Philistines defeated Israel and captured the Ark of the Covenant (1 Samuel 4:10-11), they transported it to Ashdod and placed it in the temple of Dagon. They viewed this as a symbolic victory—believing their god, Dagon, had triumphed over Yahweh.

However, something extraordinary happened:

“When the people of Ashdod arose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord!” (1 Samuel 5:3)

This was not an accident. The false god was bowing before the presence of the true God! But the Philistines, blind to the obvious, set Dagon up again—a picture of humanity’s stubborn refusal to recognize the Lord.

The next morning, Dagon had fallen again—this time with his head and hands broken off (1 Samuel 5:4). This was a clear sign of judgment. The head represented wisdom and rulership; the hands symbolized power. The message was unmistakable: Dagon was powerless before the true God.

II. The Plague and the Fear of God’s Presence

The judgment of God did not stop there. The Lord afflicted the Philistines with a terrible plague, bringing tumors upon them (1 Samuel 5:6). Wherever they moved the Ark, devastation followed. The people were terrified and recognized that they could not resist Yahweh.

Their response? They sought to remove the Ark from their land:

“Send the ark of the God of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, so that it does not kill us and our people.” (1 Samuel 5:11)

Even Israel’s enemies acknowledged the supremacy of God. They saw that He was not a god who could be controlled, moved, or manipulated—He was the true and living King.

III. Jesus: The True Triumph Over False Gods

The events of 1 Samuel 5 foreshadow an even greater victory: the triumph of Jesus Christ over every false power.

1. Jesus Disarms the Powers of Darkness (Colossians 2:15)

Paul declares that through His death and resurrection, Christ disarmed all rulers, authorities, and demonic powers, making a public spectacle of them:

“Having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” (Colossians 2:15)

Like Dagon before the Ark, Satan and all false spiritual powers fall in defeat before Jesus. The cross, which seemed like a moment of weakness, was actually Christ’s victory over sin, death, and all demonic forces.

2. False Gods Still Fall Before Jesus Today

Just as Dagon fell, all the idols of the world—whether physical or ideological—must bow before Christ.

  • False religions fall when people encounter the living Jesus.
  • Materialism and self-worship crumble when people realize that Jesus is their greatest treasure.
  • Satan’s dominion is shattered as the Gospel spreads and transforms lives.

Every attempt to exalt something above God will ultimately fail because Jesus alone reigns.

3. The Final Triumph: Every Knee Will Bow

The defeat of Dagon in 1 Samuel 5 is a preview of what will happen when Jesus returns in glory. Paul writes:

“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord.” (Philippians 2:10-11)

One day, every false god, every rebellious heart, and every spiritual power will bow before Jesus—not just in defeat, but in acknowledgment of His rightful rule.

Conclusion: Worship the One True God

The story of 1 Samuel 5 is not just an ancient historical event—it is a spiritual reality for us today. Many still trust in false gods, whether idols of wealth, pleasure, or human achievement. But only Jesus stands victorious over all.

Like the Philistines, people try to set up their gods again and again, refusing to recognize the power of the true God. But in the end, every false god will fall.

Jesus Christ is the only true King. He has triumphed over sin, death, and the powers of darkness. Will you bow before Him in surrender and worship today?

Reflection Questions:

  1. What “false gods” or idols have you allowed to stand in your life?
  2. How does Jesus’ victory over spiritual forces give you confidence in daily battles?
  3. In what ways can you worship Jesus as the one true King today?

Jesus has triumphed. Will you stand with Him?
